Let’s be honest, the moment fitness tracking devices and software hit the market, we all became like our own personal trainers. Suddenly it was easier to do sports and stay active. Our progress and activity became a tangible, observable, measurable thing.

Meta’s Oculus Move feature for Quest 2, available since November 2020, is undergoing an important improvement. This feature allows users to keep track of physical information like how many calories they burn and how much movement they engage in during gameplay while using their Virtual Reality (VR) headset. All of Oculus Move’s data was accessible only via the Move app, but not anymore. Not only has it recently been integrated directly into the iOS Oculus app, but also into the iOS Apple Health app.

Meta stated that this option is completely ‘opt-in’, meaning that only users that agree with this integration will see their data consolidated into one platform.

Meta has also explained that even if the data is stored on their servers, Oculus Move’s tracking data will not be used to push related advertising through other Meta services.

We believe that this integration is a major step forward for Meta in terms of collaboration with other digital platforms and service providers. It represents an opportunity for creators and developers to participate in the Meta ecosystem and benefit from it while keeping their own identity and core features. In other words, they can retain independence while collaborating with Meta.

Furthermore, merging real-life data together with tracking activity in VR is completely in line with The View, as one of our main statements is:

The View aims to enhance people’s life through VR, - and not replicating people’s life digitally - doing so by leveraging digital content and immersive experiences.

The Oculus Move tracking technology is paramount to optimizing the time spent doing sports and fitness activities in VR. With The View, we are going to tackle the Sport vertical by providing users with interactive sports and fitness activities. The application of activity tracking technology is a must if this is to be implemented effectively. Learning that hardware providers like Meta are open to collaboration with creators and developers who create products and services that are complementary and integrable, is a very good sign for the future. It gives additional space to leverage open innovation techniques that foster quicker development and implementation of technologically advanced new product features. On the other hand, it is not clear to what extent Meta is eager to openly cooperate with entities taking part in their ecosystem.

In this instance, it was about integration and co-operation between Meta Oculus Move and Apple Health. What will Meta’s next big integration be?
